A1222 Guide: Software Compatibility

What works, what doesn't, and what needs debugging

The software tools listed here were tested on an original Tabor beta board-based A1222 build using the latest AmigaOS beta components as of early 2023. Your mileage may obviously vary. The general rule with A1222 software is this: so long as it doesn't use floating-point instructions and data, it should be faster than a SAM460 system. If it does use floating-point instructions and data, performance depends: if it uses them heavily and is compatible with the LTE emulation layer, it should be usable but not fast. Somewhere between a normal NG Amiga and a 060 68K system. If there is an A1222 (or SPE) optimized binary available, always use it. It will be far faster.

Some software has minor incompatibilities with the LTE emulation layer and must be black-listed, much like the Petunia 68K JIT emulation layer built-in to AmigaOS. To force software to use the more compatible (but slower) interpretative emulator, you can add the software to the LTE blacklist. This guide has a ready-made version here. Just install as DEVS:load-time-blacklist on your System disk. There are some notes on this at the bottom of this page.

That said everything in this list should eventually work on the A1222 if we can debug it. All the software listed here works -- admittedly a few with some special effort -- on my AmigaOne X5000. The goal should be that anything that runs on another AOS4 platform should run on your A1222. We aren't there just yet, but always getting closer.

Some general notes

  • AmiSSL 4.x and 5.x have an issue with the LTE emulator that will not be fixed; add to blacklist Thanks to developer Oliver Roberts, this is now fixed with AmiSSL 5.7 and later!
  • 68K software that was built using StormC may be using the old wizard.library; make sure to download the AOS4 version from OS4Depot and add to the blacklist
  • None of the WarpOS emulation layers work currently on the A1222, such as powerpc.library or ReWarp Thanks to Hans de Ruiter reporting the bug, ReWarp build#80 now works successfully on the A1222. You'll also need ReWarp3DPPC installed as well
  • Make sure all of the IEEE 68K math libraries are added to the LTE blacklist
  • AREXX does work, but again, it needs to be added to the LTE blacklist
  • There are some terrific Linux ports like Gnumeric and Abiword that run in AmiCygnix; they work fine but the redraw performance is very poor at the moment
